Nicolas de Lenfent was born in 1760 in a small town in the Auvergne, in France. His father was a rich merchant who sent him to Paris to study Law. Nicolas (Nicki) abandoned his studies and sold his books to buy a violin and take lessons with Mozart. Apparently he was considered too old to become an artist ad returned to the Auvergne.

Nicki met Lestat de Lioncourt, the youngest son of their liege lord, when they were boys. Years later, after Lestat kill a pack of eight wolves, they meet again. Nicki and Lestat become friends and lovers, and eventually they escape to Paris.
